It is a Corvair axle. Problem I see is the flange broke, not the axle. I suspect you had excessive run out on the flange, and the torque of the lugs may have stressed it. Never had anything like this in 40 years. Still use the Corvair set up in my Vintage sixes, no issues. Good parts makes a better set upon you wish to upgrade, but the Corvair set up should be fine, just make sure you magna flux and check the runout, after all they are 50 years old!

That looks like the old style modified Corvair axle to me. I got one set on a car too, sort of makes me uneasy now………

Duncan, not a lot more to tell about the axle unless you saw something I didn't. It was a used competition axle that I got almost three race weekends out of. Unknown brand but larger diameter shaft than stock and one piece design. It's funny, I guess I have a better track record racing with stock axles than upgraded ones.
The incident itself was uneventful, braking hard and down shifting for a slow turn after a long straight. The right rear corner dropped a couple inches turning me sideways then I slid off track left. I could see my wheel keep going several hundred feet. When I came to a stop I chuckled and thought that's just part of this sport. Easy to laugh about it when no people or cars where hurt... much.

I tried a couple of different pressures this weekend at MSR - Houston . My best times were with a cold tire pressure of 28, hot was about five degrees higher.
In other news, I broken an axle on turn 11 and got to watch my right rear tire make it all the way to turn 13! Spitfire breaking and axle? Same old story, new Storyteller.

That's consistent with what I've found with the R888 pressures.
I am faster with R888s but that's likely due to going from 60s to 50s.

I believe the website says 32-38 hot with temps 160-220.
Be curious to hear what others say. I think my car is faster on the Hoosiers.
Wish I was going to COTA with you guys in Nov.

What cold tyre pressures are you using for the R888s?
The car is a '62 Spitfire - 1425 Lbs with 5.5x13 wheels The tyres have been shaved and heat cycled.
I have heard that they work best hot in the low 40 psi range and you should start off at 33-35 psi.
Looking for others thoughts and experiences.
Thanks
