[Fot] Removing rusty lug nuts . . .

I haven’t tried this technique yet on frozen nuts/studs, but if all one wants to do is simply removing rust and you are not in a hurry, it’s hard to beat molasses.
I’m nearly done soaking a rusty engine mount assembly in a 10% solution of molasses and water. It takes a week or so to finish bubbling but it does a great job of removing rust — and I can just dump it on the ground without killing the soil outside my workshop. This mount is a 3’ long tube (for a small rear-engined car) that is sound but had hard-to-reach rust in many nooks and crannies — I made a trough on the floor out of Visqueen and some 4” X 4”s and filled it with the solution of tap water and agricultural molasses (inexpensive and comes in large containers). I wire brushed it and chipped off the scale before putting it in the solution. I pulled it a few days ago to drain the sludge that had formed inside the (almost completely sealed) tube.
