Could you be thinking of Don Devendorf? He won  a GP championship with a 
Spitfire in 1968. Cal Club guy.

(And EP with  GT6+ in '70; and then three more in CS with Datsuns)

There was a Dick Davenport, but he was a sedan racer from Kansas (4 
championships in CS with Alfa and Datsun).
