I’m in two of the four camps. I don’t run unmodified junk transmissions and I don’t have a Toyota five speed installed (though I do have one sitting around, tanned, rested and ready). I have a TR6 transmission that Hardy Prentice did for me that seems bulletproof. Real triumph guts, shifts like it has some kind of electronic assist and looks fine whenever I open it up to check it. It’s been out of Peyote for a while though, I don’t like to tear it up. Instead I use quaife dog boxes in TR6 cases. Not a cheap solution, and they eventually need work, but they take the pounding I give them without complaint.

I think “Vintage Spirit” is a ship that sailed a long time ago. We don’t see megabuck Ferraris at our races very often—now it’s because they’ve become toys for guys who think 30 million dollars is not too much to pay for garage bling, but even before that, having your “real down to the last bolt” Ferrari or Maserati get it’s butt kicked by a mongrel like Peyote, or a TR4 that’s lapping well above the track record for open wheel cars in 1965, is too painful to endure.
