[Fot] Al-Fin Drums

Hi John,
I only wrote down the comment in the Moss UK TR2-TR4A catalogue (paga A5)
stating that their circumferential finned Alfin drums are "reproductions of
the rare factory option". Maybe the early (TR2) drums were made like that,
just like other sports cars of that time(Jaguar i.e.)
I used both the Moss drums with rather small radially fins and their later
circumferential finned drums, the latter are much stronger and are
performing better. I believe taht the holes are promoting air circulation in
the drums, the pressure in the brake lines to the rear are 50-60 % higher
than to the front, without brake fadeing (chelated metal linings)

If you look at page 5 on the Kastner Drive Preparation CD you will see that
the alfin rear drums on the racing TR4 are radially-finned. The photo
caption says that these were a gift from the factory Competition Department.
So they were using a design similar to the Z-car.
Hey Kas, can you shed some light on this? Thanks

Years ago, Moss Europe was selling Alfin drums with radial fins, only good
for looks but not for racing.
Now, Moss is selling Alfin drums with circumferential fins, just like the
factory option : these are very strong and longlasting in racing. I made a
big hole in the backplate (1.5") and a row of 1/3" holes in the drums. I
believe these holes are a great help for cooling by air circulation inside
the drums

I think that I removed almost a half inch of material off to clear the
backing plate. The drums were inexpensive and had Centric packaging. I could
get the part number if need be.
