[Fot] Diff case spreader

That's pretty much a moot point.
Lots of rear axle designs use that method. Besides Ford all the 
Chrysler's and corporate Jeeps do.

It doesn't change the fact that a spreader is not needed to do the job.

Actually the bearing carrier shims accomplish 2 tasks.

 1. move the differential carrier left or right to set proper
    orientation or backlash to the drive pinion.
 2. provide preload to the carrier bearings. (just like having to set
    preload on the drive pinion bearings)
