Except in this case, it is "meter" as in a measuring device.  "Micrometer" refers to a measuring tool, what I believe you call a Messschraube in Deutsch.

My micrometers read in .0001" increments.

Apologies to all if this was intended as a joke.  My foreign-born wife makes a lot of similar "jokes" and complains when I don't correct her.
