Larry,
After having a number of these boxes apart my bet is that the lever arm for
the reverse gear has been screwed in too far. This is the adjustment for
how far the pins on the ends of the arm engage both the gear and the
operating lever in the top cover. If the stud that this arm screws onto was
removed from the case then it must be readjusted during assembly while the
stud is pulled back into the case with the securing nut. The spline on the
stud stops it from turning when installed but the threads on the stud and
the arm are what adjust the distance the lever fits into the gear. Hard to
explain but if you had this apart I think you will understand the concept.
A rotten two hour job!!!

And then there is the rest of the story. We checked this thing out
manually, before stuffing it back in the car. I checked it out on jack
stands and it shifted through all the gears, including reverse. I backed it
out of my garage and drove it onto the trailer to take it back to the body
shop for some panel alignment. Then there was no longer any reverse. I
haven't pulled the top cover off yet, but am willing to bet the gear is no
longer engaged in the shifter lever. Has anyone else had this problem? How
did you fix it? Having tried to figure an easy way to get it reengaged, I
can't imagine how it got out. This should be a very interesting problem, but
not one that I really wanted right now.
My only thought is that there is a chunk out of the side of the gear, but I
can't believe we would not have noticed that.
