I run "upper cylinder lubricant" in my street TR3. Based on several more
recent stories (including a local club member who had new rings "go away" in
under 10k miles in his street TR4), I add 4 ounces of "TC-W3" 2-cycle oil to
each tank of fuel, along with one ounce of Red Line lead substitute (added
after I started noticing valve seat recession).
Can't prove that it helps, but the engine did start idling faster during the
first tank (which might have been something else, not sure), and my fuel
mileage seems to be creeping up. For the moment anyway, seems like cheap
insurance. FWIW the lead substitute also stopped the valve recession. 6
months after starting to add it in each tank, the exhaust valves were still
right on the money.
BTW, Triumph also suggested using upper cylinder lube in the TR2-3 owner's
manual.
