IMO, it is a defining characteristic.  There aren't many openly gay rugby
players, so mentioning that characteristic helps identify the person you are
referring to.  If he were unusually tall, one might say "that 7 foot tall
rugby player" without implying that there was anything "wrong" with being
that tall.
