[Fot] Distributor gear failure

My dad always used a shim cut by hand from an aluminum soft-drink can  
that fits under the dist. pedistal.  Never had a problem and it's  
still in the car.
A beer can would work too!  It raises it up a few thou.

Is there found any reason why this happens?

If you look on these worn gears you see only one side of the cam gear  
teeth
are worn out the opposite side is in most cases okay.
Does this come from eccentric gear wheel?
Or is the distributor gear not in the right position (height) to fit  
the cam
gear?
The workshop manual has no hind to adjust the hight of the distributor  
gear.

Any ideas?
