Look at the NipponDenso Chevy mini-alternator, 40 AMPS, 5 lb.
It's less than $75 to your door for a brand-new alternator.
To install it, you need an upper bracket (less than $20 or the scrap pile,
your choice) and a couple of spacers (another $10 or less at the h/w
store) and the proper sized belt.
Electrical hookup is easy - a big wire to the battery and a wire from the
ignition switch to excite the alternator.
I put one on my race car and I love it.
