Gentlemen,
Following the informative exchange about running in oils, I still wonder
what Rotella (there are several variations) you use for initial run in ?
We European based folks will have to buy from the US as the Rotella family
of oils is available only in North America and Thailand.
In Europe Shell have the Rimula family for heavy duty (buses, lorries, etc),
but it will not be up to the job, see below:
I discussed this morning with an engineer of Shell in Switzerland. The
Rimula lorries oils are totally different from the Rotella family, as diesel
engine design in Europe and US is quite different and the oils are based on
the engines used locally. Shell even have specific oils for Switzerland
(tiny country with barely 7 million inhabitants) !
The engineer explained that the Shell oils here for passenger cars have low
formulations of Zinc and Phosphorus (well below 1000/million). He searched
his analysis database and came with a RIMULA "universal" oil (both for
trains, cars, lorries, etc, heavy and light duty use) in 10W40-or 15W40 with
content of 1200/million Zinc ad 1000/million Phosphorus. It is the RIMULA
R3-U+ 10W40 or 15W40.
As it seems a bit low in Zinc and Phosphorus (Greg Solow advised 1600 and
1300 respectively), I will buy Rotella in the US.
So what Rotella do you use for engine start up?
Thank you !
Cheers
Alex

Thank you Greg! Inf act what type of Rotella should be used for initial
engine start up, just searched a little bit and found it is a family of oils
with many different ones?
And apparently Rotella is not available in Europe, only in North America and
Thailand according to shell.com Here for lorries Shell proposes various
grades/qualities of RIMULA. I will ask them the phosphorus and zinc content.
Thank you again !
Cheers
Alex

You may be able to contact Shell Oil technical services in Europe..They
could tell you the Zinc and Phosphorus content of the Shell Rotella oils
available in Europe. I would bet they are the same as here. The
"automotive Diesel" grade oils that are sold here, were formulated for
European Diesel engine cars to meet the car manufacturer's specs. You are
looking for over 1600 parts per million of Zink and 1300 parts per million
of Phosphorus.
