Joe,
I considered a rechargeable transponder too for multiple cars but was talked out of it. I'd suggest going for a wired unit and an inline connector if you need to switch cars. (My wife and I shared one for a year, then bought a second transponder.)
1. They take a few days to charge. You must remember to plug it into the AC adapter by Wednesday if you're headed out to a race Friday. Experience shows an overnight charge at the track will not get you through the day. And Murphy says you'll forget.
2. They never turn off so you have to recharge them each use. Therefore in and out of the car constantly.
3. They are a sealed unit. You have to rip the case apart yourself or send it in to get the battery replaced. Midwestern Council bought 24 rental units in 2003 and the batteries were mostly gone a few years ago.
