Ed,
What are you calling a 1/2 sliding hub?  Is that the synchro hub between 
2nd and 1st?  My article at vtr.org - 
www.vtr.org/maintain/TransRebuild/TRTrans02.pdf. describes a problem 
that might be similar.  In one transmission, we replaced the springs and 
balls in the synchro hubs and that fixed the problem.  The manuals 
explain how to check the synchro hubs and that is what I do now.
