Ah, but it does.  Say for example you start with two 400 lb/in springs and
stack them together.  Apply 400 pounds, and the stack deflects by 2 inches
(making it a 200 lb/in stack).  Separate the springs and they go from 200
lb/in to 400 lb/in.
