@ all

Thank you very much for the very detailed descriptions and links.
I really have now a lot more knowledge about the SCCA classes.

Here in Europe the classes are like this way.
A to H indicates the period.
Tr3 is E - before '61
TR4 is F - after '61
TR6 is G - after '65
And so on.
All period classes have rules about the modifications they can make.

Each class is separated by engine capathity and if it is a sports car, GT,
touring car, formula racer.

Quite different I would say.

Cheers
Chris

The answer actually depends, but in short - these are the class
designation for the car.

In road racing, the "P" stands for "production" and there is a set of
rules that defines what mods you can (and cannot) do to the car...
presently, in SCCA, there is EP, FP, GP. At one time, there was AP through
HP with the primary distinction being the displacement of the engine.

In autocross, the "P" stands for "Prepared". The rules (again) dictate
what mods are allowed and are not allowed. In SCCA presently there is XP,
CP, DP, EP, FP.

If you see a road racer with DP, it's based on the rules from back before
about 1983 when there was a big rules change. "Big" 4 cylinder Triumphs
(not Spitfire) run in EP if they have less than 2 liters displacement and
DP if they have more than 2 liters. 6 cylinder Triumphs presently run in
EP, but in the past ran CP if they were fuel injected (or with triple DCOE
Webers) and DP if they ran the twin strombergs. Spitfire runs in FP or GP
(and back in the day they also would have run in HP if they were running
the 1147 motor).

Bottom line: it's a class designation.

I hope this helps!
