Joe,
An important point is that the transponder needs to see the track not only 
straight down but also forward and back by at least a few inches. As you cross 
the line the transponder makes a number of hits: weaker as you approach/depart, 
strongest as you pass directly over. It triangulates on the signal strength 
coming and going to find the exact millisecond you are centered over the loop. 
Ideally there should be an uninterrupted cone of vision from the transponder 
bottom to the asphalt. AMB tells you the maximum height is 2 feet. But they do 
not tell you there is a also practical minimum height of around 9-12 inches: too 
small a cone of signal means too few hits to accurately position you. That means 
don't do the obvious and mount it on the frame. This generates a weak-signal 
warning to the T&S system and you will likely get a love note at pit in to 
change it. (Been there, done that.) Mid-height inside the wheel well is AMB's 
suggestion, but outside the front valance works great too and provides easier 
access for removal.
