Subject: [Fot] conclusion to summer woes
FOT'ers; This past season i seemed to have had a monkey on my back in
regards
to ignition issues and fuel delivery, so this is a quick lo-down on what i
ended up finding. As you folks know from past discussion, my problems
started
with a faulty crank-fired ign. coil base, the HPV-1 and this was diagnosed
into the third race of the season. After consulting YOU folks for input, i
decided to stay with the crank-fire set-up, it was a toss-up between
converting back to a distributor. So a newer version was purchased, the XDI,
same manufacturer and i actually did follow the instructions to a Tee.(
Yea-it's a first) The new version has a remote module which i mounted in
the
cockpit, and this module has a tiny little light the tells you if the coils
are fireing to the plugs, novel idea! The tiny little light must blink
RED-GREEN when your trying to start-up. Forward ahead, race four, car on
trailer, got time to throw a timeing light on just to to be sure, no start,
can't see this stupid tiny little light due to sun glare. Cranked on it till
i
could fry a freeking egg on the starter. Race four? Never got off the
trailer.Fast forward, factory tech. guy says i have to many
grounds......oooookay.So i says, i followed the instr. to a
Tee.......really!
Try this he says; take pos. battery cable straight to solinoid, (by-pass
main
disc. sw.) solinoid to starter. Now take neg. batt. cable, tie-wrap to
pos.cable that i just ran to starter and ground it as close as possable to
starter. Take off engine to chassis grnd. and take off neg. batt. cable to
tranny mount. He kinda had an accent so i natureally only believed half of
what he was saying......wrong....car fired-up pronto AND that pretty little
light worked as it was supposed to, Gotta check the car out, only thing
going
on was the Alfa Rameo track day, Forward, nice weather, car still has a bug
at
WOT only on the straights, same thing all morning. Lunch time, to pissed to
eat, and everybody kept their dogs a fair distance from my pit. For
peets-sake
, gotta be fuel, off come full bowl caps, check fuel, check
floats,everything
good. LOUDSPEAKER, group 1 up, in a panick i pushed the float arms up into
oblivion, off we go, 1'st lap yellow, green comes down and
...................sweeeeeeeet. No kidding, every turn worker at the
checkered
flag gave hoots and hollers and big two thumbs up to finally see the 'ol
hotrod tr do it's thing, till next time. Mark Pendy #65tr4
