Well, technically I suppose you could say the original mistake was made by
Roger Christian (a local DJ according to Wikipedia) who wrote the lyrics.

But Brian Wilson (who wrote the music) frequently collaborated with "Jan"
Berry of Jan & Dean; and I prefer the version that J&D released on their
"Surf City" album in 1964.
