2009 GCR 9.3.26.3 [Pg. 80 --very first sentence]: "A positive locking fuel
filler cap (no Monza/flip type) shall be used."

I see no ambiguity there -- the portion in parentheses IS in the rule -- NO
flip-type caps. Not, at least, in SCCA racing.

I even got called on mine once, until (in full evil grin mode) I opened the
trunk to show the fuel cell. My flip cap is perfectly legal as long as no
actual fuel passes through it!  ;-)

  Flip caps are not illegal, they just need to be secured with a safety
device.

    Actually, everything you write below I agree with. It *is* fun with our
LBCs to try to save a few of those silly little things that make them
distinctively Triumph. I still have the Monza flip-cap gas filler on my car
for just that reason. Of course, it isn't connected to anything now, just
there for looks. You have to open the trunk lid to fill the fuel cell.
(Besides, flip caps are illegal on race cars.)

    A guy I knew made his Spitfire into a screamer autocross Modified class
car. A fun thing was to find stuff on his car that was still Spitfire. My
favorite -- he still had the cowl-mounted ashtray.

      I was just having fun with this thread with my "sacrilege" reply.
Racing cars has always been about modifying OEM equipment to make it  more
serviceable, faster, etc...  Why should these tabs be any  different?



      On the other hand..  At some point, in the backs of our minds, we  don't
want our cars, over time, to morph into something that isn't  really a
Triumph.  That we replace something that finally fails after  nearly half a
century with plastic ties and/or Velcro just struck a  nerve with me. Will
there be any sign of those old metal tabs 20 or  30 years from now?



      It seemed to me to be a great thread...  Talking about how to save  this
one little silly detail that could be so easily replaced with low  tech modern
solutions!



      Of course, it's not an issue for all cars in all classes of racing.   By
all means, do what is appropriate for your car.  It's just nice to  think that
because of such discussions there may still be some of  those silly tabs to be
seen in the pits, for future generations to  ponder!
