two things come to mind as I consider my 3 kids:

Autocross - low consequence, lots of fun, moderate stress and speeds
comensurate with real driving. The last thing I want for my youngest in
particular is for him to get comfortable at 100mph.

Second - I agree with Click and Clack - Volvo Volvo Volvo - they suggest an
old 240, I would hold out for an airbag...
