        The addition of ethanol  compromises vehicle mileage, just as you 
have experienced. 
 
        From a consumer point of  view, the consumer pays more $/BTU for 
ethanol gasoline than $/BTU for  gasoline without ethanol. From a political point 
of view, we have happy  corn farmers. 
 
        As  energy scientists search for alternative fuels, one of  the 
challenges is finding a fuel source that provides as much energy per  gallon as 
gasoline and diesel.

I've  driven about 5500 miles so far in the past couple weeks and tried 
various  brands.  I noted this: when the alcohol is added from a SHELL station the  
mileage drops between 2-4 miles per gallon. Other brands of all kinds that 
say  they add the alcohol make almost no difference.  Anybody ready to comment  
of this?
