I always carried drifts that fit in and on the guides, and used the copper 
knockoff hammer to carefully drift the guides out and in (you can deform them).  
The shock helps.
I highly recommend honing the guides after they are installed; I had too many 
failures with lesser
methods, and this recommendation is even stronger for non-cast-iron guides 
and race cams.
