I try to watch them close. There are many variables re service  life but 
usually the valves will leak before the rings will.
Average fresh engine after run-in is usually 2-3%, some less. Once they get  
into 2 digit numbers I get concerned (race engine). Street engines will leak 
30%  or more & still run well...
