I've posted your situation to the RMVR Bulletin Board.

A few years ago, a member had his truck, trailer w/racer stolen from an
hotel parking lot. Towed the whole thing away. They thought it was a
contractor's trailer loaded with tools. When they found an unmarketable
vintage racer, they abandoned it, stealing the tools.

The club and the owner put so much effort into the search, it impressed
the investigators so much, they got all the local TV News involved. They
got great air time and had a viewer spot the trailer.
