The thickness of nitriding depends on how long it is left in the hottank
absorbing the carrier gasses. In my experiences with various brands of
cranks and local nitriding companies, most are only nitrified to a depth of
around 0.015". A file test is usually quite OK to determine if it is
nitrided. If we want a deeper layer, we have to specially order it done that
way. I have just checked a stock (unground) 1500 crank in the workshop, and
it is definitely NOT nitrided
