Excessive end-float kills these things. The thrust surfaces get worn &  
things start chucking back & forth & this is the result. The filter  doesn't get 
all the fine trash out so they need regular fluid changes,  especially if 
they're flogged hard.
Also it's getting increasingly hard to get (good) rebuild parts  nowadays.
