Well, only if you believe the oil companies and the API (which after all is
a group of oil companies) would actually tell you "Our oil will destroy your
engine" or that the EPA is lying to us.  Personally, I doubt seriously that
anyone working for an oil company would tell us that (certainly not if he
expected to keep his job !)  And since Castrol went to court saying, in
effect, that any old motor oil was "synthetic" because it comes through a
refinery; I would take anything they tell you with a block of salt.

The EPA has basically mandated this change, but as near as I can tell,
hasn't done any studies of the effect on solid lifter engines, especially
under harsh conditions.

There's an interesting comment at

suggesting that motorcycle oils may have more ZDDP than automotive oils ...
might be worth further investigation.
