[Roadsters] brake lights

I'm working on my brake lights which don't light up.  Currently the turn indicators blink appropriately and lights come on when lights are turned on.  
I've pulled the brake switch and it seems to work.  Open circuit when the button is in and closed when button is out.  
So - if one of the bulbs is out, do they all not work?
Do the brake lights work without turning on the ign. switch? 
I've downloaded one of the color wiring diagrams and I'm surprised to see where the wires run to.
