Keith Traphagan and I are putting together a North Texas Datsun Roadster meet at his place North of Dallas, in Lucas, TX on the 17th.  All roadster enthusiasts, (including Okies) are welcome.  We  are still working out the itinerary, but it will be a good opportunity for us to take advantage of this great driving weather, BS about cars, take photos and soak-in some beautiful country scenery.  Keith will be putting up some awesome BBQ. I'll bring some favorite side dishes and you're encouraged to do the same. We are trying to get a headcount, so please RSVP.

On either side of the windshield gasket, on the outside, is a  hole in this
car.  

 

Is this for a trim piece?  Or did the DPO just put these holes there (one on
each side?)

 

Also, on the passenger side is another mystery hole.

Yes, holes@ windshield are for trim. Sin City is in the process of making some for certain years. 

Holes on doors are for posters to hold tonneau cover.

 Sounds like they could be the windshield washer nozzle holes....also the other hole might be an Antenna hole?? Pictures?

On this day 30 years ago Team.Net came into being.? The British-cars 
mailing list was already going strong, an offshoot from rec.autos Usenet 
group.? Dale Cook, Jim Muller, then me. Team.net went from 2 lists at 
the beginning, autox and british-cars, and exploded into nearly 70 
different lists with something like 15,000 individuals subscribed at its 
peak.? For a while it was pretty much the only game in town.? As I 
recall, when I attended the SCCA Solo II Nationals 25th Anniversary 
event, something like 2/3rds of the 1,000+ entrants were on the autox list.

And it amazes me that with such a scatterbrained procrastinator like me 
behind the curtain it is still on the air. It is a lot quieter these 
days, much better software handle many of the janitorial tasks 
automatically.? Back in the beginning, I had to do *everything* by hand, 
so to speak. Subscribes, unsubscribes, errors, I was spending 10, 15, 20 
hours a week maintaining the server.? The first server had a 100 MHz 
processor.? Things have changed.? Back then just having a fast network 
connection at a residence was rare and expensive.? Good old DSL.? I 
remember that time when my service provider went belly up, and team net 
was off the air for 11 days straight.? I don't miss those days at all.

Anyway, happy birthday to those of you still here.? I hope I can 
continue to provide a useful service for years to come.

OK, we?ve got about 5 guys coming to Keith?s for the North Texas meet next Saturday in Lucas.  Let me know if you would like to come.  It?s open to anyone that has a Datsun or simply wants to look.  Not a lot of guys have running cars, but all are welcome to trailer their projects or racer, as at least one or two are planning to do.  510 guys may want to come, as well. Just let me know so I can tell Keith.

NOTE: You guys in South TX need to start thinking about a joint meetup this fall.  I?m thinking Waco or Kerrville.  However, I love the hill country.  My 1500 has to go back roads or trailer, cause there?s no way I can do 75 MPH without something breaking bad.  Feel free to reach out.

It sounds to me like the distributor is not in the correct place.

 

Lots of popping when I drive it and of course lousy performance.

 

Early 67 roadster 1600

 

I am used to a distributor that you can turn quite a bit in either
direction; this one looks to me like it only turns a little bit after
loosening the philips screw.  What am I missing?

Consider your timing chain having slipped a tooth or the tensioner damaged.

Distributor should typically rotate a good 30 degrees.

I'd like to fill in the letters here so they really stand out.  anyone done
this?  have a recommendation?

 

Maybe black nail polish and then clean the top surface with nail polish
remover?

 

I have some black fabric paint that I used for another project - maybe wipe
that over it.  I think it would clean off pretty easily.

1-Shot pinstriping paints are great for that because they stay open (wet) for a while longer.  Don't use and solvent to wipe off because it will dissolve the high AND low spots.  Let it set up but before it dries had just wipe it off.  Might also try a little wax on the high spot before paint so the high spot wipe more easily.

budge from the side of the transmission (so pinion and carrier can be 
replaced with correct # teeth and alternate carrier)?

The locking tab was removed, but the pinion carrier will not rotate CCW.

Pinion carrier hasn't been removed in 50 years, but trying to think of a 
reason it would not unscrew.

Bob,

It doesn't unscrew - it just slides in the side of the case and is sealed by an o ring.  The pinion is secured in the sleeve by a small spilt pin.

>From Part II of the Datsun Roadster Book.

Remove the speedometer drive gear by releasing the set bolt and retainer plate from the side of the tail shaft housing.  Pull the speedometer drive sleeve out of the casing.  Inspect the plastic gear for wear and replace it if the teeth are damaged.  Do this by driving the teeny split pin out of the side of the sleeve.  If you replace the gear, you can also renew the seal that is inside the sleeve.  Replace the outer sleeve o-ring.  Oil the o-ring to ease assembly into the tail shaft housing, reinsert the sleeve, and secure the retaining plate in the sleeve?s notch with the set bolt and lock washer.
