I can finally say it. I am the proud owner of a 1967 Datsun 2000! That's
right, SRL 0248 is now officially mine. It feels good to be part of an
ultra-exclusive club. Now you know why I've been posting so many pictures
of Sora lately. I had to share now that it's sitting in the garage next to
my SR20-powered roadster. Stay tuned as I bring this SRL back to
concours-level status!

I think there is going to be some serious sibling rivalry happening in the near future.  The black one will no longer be the most photographed roadster in the world.  That?s bound to create some jealousy issues in that garage!

I'd like to add a little back story to the picture from the previous email. We had taken the car to dinner in Scottsdale, right on the main drag. There were a couple of Lamborghinis and a Ferrari among the Teslas and Mercedes parked and being valeted. Where was the crowd looking at cars? Around a little red Japanese car of course. It was fun letting my wife answer questions and tell the story of how we found it and put it together. This is the car that we found underneath a tree in the high desert of Arizona. There was an engine in the car but it was in the front seat, the transmission was in the trunk. Lots of help from the group here and 311s.org. My quick story is that for years I had told myself that I'd lose 100lbs and buy myself a sports car. I've dropped 175lbs and my wife ended up with the sports car. It is well worth it though; just watching her have fun with the thing is a joy.

Anyway, its fun to have people acknowledge the car and appreciate the effort we've put in to it. BTW, my wife put in at least as many hours as I did, she earned the right to say the car is hers.

Great story...and how true about these beautiful little 50 year old Datsun roadsters stealing the show from the Uber expensive cars. Same thing happens at Neptune?s Net on PCH near Malibu in SoCal.

There were a couple of Lamborghinis and a Ferrari among the Teslas and Mercedes parked and being valeted. Where was the crowd looking at cars? Around a little red Japanese car of course. It was fun letting my wife answer questions and tell the story of how we found it and put it together. This is the car that we found underneath a tree in the high desert of Arizona. There was an engine in the car but it was in the front seat, the transmission was in the trunk. Lots of help from the group here and 311s.org. My quick story is that for years I had told myself that I'd lose 100lbs and buy myself a sports car. I've dropped 175lbs and my wife ended up with the sports car. It is well worth it though; just watching her have fun with the thing is a joy.

Great interview and video Alvin and Larry.?
When Alvin said the flat low windshield dash started out as stock, didn?t the 67-1/2 dash only have 3 toggle switches? My 67 1600 Sora blue has the 4 switches and chrome bezels around the gauges. 
 My first car when I was 19 was a used red 66 1600 for tooling around Cal Poly SLO as an electronic engineering major. It was quite a step up from my freshman year at Cal Poly when I had my 65 Honda 250 Scrambler. Both were fun driving between my parents home in Pacifica and SLO and hanging corners on the old Devil?s Slide Highway 1 before there were many guard rails and 50+ years before the twin tunnels.

Hi Al
My roadster is quite the Frankenstein. It is a 1967.5 SPL, but the dash
face is from an early car, so 4-toggles and 7 chrome-trimmed gauges: my
favorite.  The whole interior is due for a refresh and I'm a big fan of the
OEM dash finish.

April is the month that our beloved Solvang Datsun Roadster Show is held.
Since this year's show is postponed I'll be posting images/memories from

April 11th.? As many of you know, the domain team.net was officially 
registered on April 11, 1991, by the late Bill Caloccia.? I have been 
managing the mailing lists on autox.team.net since then, actually for a 
while before that.? I took over? from Jim Muller, who took over from 
Dale Cook, and I wish I had archives of those first few years.? Actually 
I may have some in my office, on 1/4 inch tape cassettes.? Every now and 
then I consider trying to revive some of the old HP-UX boxes I have to 
see if I can still read any of those tapes.? Maybe someday.

Anyway, in the beginning I was routing everything through the servers at 
the University of Utah Computer Science Department, where I was 
employed.? When my fellow sys admins started noticing just how much 
network traffic there was on a certain box, my boss strongly suggested I 
make other arrangements.? So I went about getting a network connection 
at home.? Back then, it was not that easy, or cheap.? And as I recall, 
the first dedicated Team Net server was an HP box with one of the first 
100+ megahertz CPUs, and even with a deal through HP, who worked closely 
with the U in those days the system set me back about $2,500.? Hardware 
has improved since then.? And that money didn't all come out of my 
pocket, I initiated a fund drive among the list members and got a great 
response.? Back then it was all checks in the mail, and I mailed a thank 
you postcard to every contributor, or at least most of them, no doubt I 
missed a few.? And for some time there was an annual fund drive to cover 
the rather high cost of having sufficient bandwidth from my house.

So here it is 29 and just everybody has fast network available to 
them.?? I dropped the fund drives some years back, though folks do 
continue to contribute to the cause.? Now a few clicks in Paypal can 
take care of it, though some still prefer to send checks. Yep, things 
are different now.? And with the Covid-19 pandemic, a LOT different.? 
But the Team Net mailing lists are still chugging along, providing those 
spending more time at home a bit of distraction, entertainment or 
education as we keep our beloved vehicles rolling along the roads.

I plan to keep it going as long as I can, who knows how many years I 
have left.? April 11th is also my birthday, 66 this year, and I 
certainly won't live forever.? And I fear that when I die, Team Net will 
die.? Sigh.

April 11th.? As many of you know, the domain team.net was officially 
registered on April 11, 1991, by the late Bill Caloccia.? I have been 
managing the mailing lists on autox.team.net since then, actually for a 
while before that.? I took over? from Jim Muller, who took over from 
Dale Cook, and I wish I had archives of those first few years.? Actually 
I may have some in my office, on 1/4 inch tape cassettes.? Every now and 
then I consider trying to revive some of the old HP-UX boxes I have to 
see if I can still read any of those tapes.? Maybe someday.

Anyway, in the beginning I was routing everything through the servers at 
the University of Utah Computer Science Department, where I was 
employed.? When my fellow sys admins started noticing just how much 
network traffic there was on a certain box, my boss strongly suggested I 
make other arrangements.? So I went about getting a network connection 
at home.? Back then, it was not that easy, or cheap.? And as I recall, 
the first dedicated Team Net server was an HP box with one of the first 
100+ megahertz CPUs, and even with a deal through HP, who worked closely 
with the U in those days the system set me back about $2,500.? Hardware 
has improved since then.? And that money didn't all come out of my 
pocket, I initiated a fund drive among the list members and got a great 
response.? Back then it was all checks in the mail, and I mailed a thank 
you postcard to every contributor, or at least most of them, no doubt I 
missed a few.? And for some time there was an annual fund drive to cover 
the rather high cost of having sufficient bandwidth from my house.

So here it is 29 and just everybody has fast network available to 
them.?? I dropped the fund drives some years back, though folks do 
continue to contribute to the cause.? Now a few clicks in Paypal can 
take care of it, though some still prefer to send checks. Yep, things 
are different now.? And with the Covid-19 pandemic, a LOT different.? 
But the Team Net mailing lists are still chugging along, providing those 
spending more time at home a bit of distraction, entertainment or 
education as we keep our beloved vehicles rolling along the roads.

I plan to keep it going as long as I can, who knows how many years I 
have left.? April 11th is also my birthday, 66 this year, and I 
certainly won't live forever.? And I fear that when I die, Team Net will 
die.? Sigh.

But for now, enjoy and stay healthy.

Great Nissan Patrol Alvin. It even has 
Mk 1 Mod 0 dashboard toggle switches (5?) which were later improved but same concept on the low windshield flat dash early roadsters.

-VIN #02673 is in correct range for a '68 ('69 SRLs started at 7001)
-No VIN # stamp on dash, driver's side behind windshield ('69 and '70 had a

-smaller center vent holes in front apron ('69 and '70 had larger holes),

Another tell for '68 is the single-row fuse box---'69 and '70 had 2-row
fuse boxes.

Does anyone know what is? up with the rear leaf springs?? It looks like 
an additional leaf added to the bottom?? A helper spring or a cover?

Cool! Wouldn't U20/5-speed swapped 1600 be 200 except for the name and 3.90
gearing instead of 3.70? What's the gearing of the RX-7 sourced rear end?

Ronnie,
There are a few other minor difference between a '69 SPL and SRL besides
the Engine, Trans and rear end.
The RX-7 GSL-SE R&P is 4.08 (LSD).

The Solvang show would be held this Saturday 4/25. Around this time,
everyone would be preparing cars and planning trips. For me, it's almost a
ritual. A pilgrimage.
Way more than just a car show. From the butterflies in my stomach as I
approach that roadster-lined street early morning...to simply placing a
name to a face with fellow owners...I love this show.
Here's to the friendships made and good times, anxiously awaiting the next

I need to either rebuild or replace the calipers and probably the rotors on
my '70 2000. The hard lines between the pots on the OE setup are leaking.
I'm just getting the car to the point that I'm comfortable selling it.
AFAIK, I can still get the hard lines from a place on the east coast, but
I'm thinking it might just be easier to do something like the Volvo caliper
swap. Working on and bleeding the OE calipers is a real PITA! Part of the
challenge of doing anything is that I really don't have a decent place to
work, therefore the emphasis on "easy". I understand that the term is
relative.

Thoughts? Rough idea of relative costs?

Also white post restoration can resleave with stainless steel and completely rebuild them

Norcal caravan to Solvang today: Party of 1.
Like old times, today I made a blast down to the little Danish town on my
way to a friend's. Saturday in Solvang is typically bustling, but not on
this early morning: Somber was word with vacant hotel lots and closed signs
on all bakery's.
Despite the lack of dozens of roadsters and people, hazard tape all over
Main St. Park and missing lunch with Ron Eastman+SocalROC, I immediately
pretended it was The Datsun Roadster Show day with some staged photos and
places I've always wanted to park in front of but never had a chance...I
even hopped over a gate like usual to get the shot.
And just like that...I arrived back home this evening in San Jose, 612
miles later. #WhenWillThisSR20Break

On Saturday morning I drove down to Solvang, ~250 miles from San Jose via

As cool as it was to visit Solvang, it was not my primary destination on
this trip. I left Solvang and headed back up North to Paso Robles to meet
at my friend Kevin's home. Kevin recently listed his 1969 SPL known here as
"Spike" and I wanted to join the new owner (Raj) as he picked up the
roadster.

When I arrived, Raj, his family and Kevin were already getting familiar
with Spike:

A little background on Raj, I met him through Francis around 2001. Raj had
a 510 with a KA24DE and a  '68 SRL, both regretfully sold. He's currently
building an SR20DET-powered 510:

Raj's interest was grounded on the importance of having a roadster that was
ready to drive, mechanically proven. Cosmetics were not a priority. Spike
was perfect, and you may have seen my rave review of the car here:

load up the soft top and a comprehensive set of spares--one of which
included the coveted competition Aluminum oil pan. Kevin described how he
removed it because of the heavy rallye/street use Spike saw....yes we had a
brief chuckle about my comp pan mishap :)

Unlike the usual car purchase exchange, Spike was not trailered or shipped,
it wasn't babied or light-footed back home with its new owner. Raj simply
carried the torch and drove it like he stole it. Kevin and Heather kindly
helped with the transition by leading us on a fun run via Peachy Canyon Rd
out to 46 where Raj and I would begin our coastal journey.

we embarked on an epic fun run up the coast via HWY1 back home. I had to be

Kevin listed Spike on 311s to the community first, with what i thought was
a ridiculously low asking price...but this was one of those transactions
not based soley on squeezing cents.When I found out that Raj was seriously
interested I knew I had to be there and thought why not celebrate with a
nice drive back home...a taste of more funs runs that Raj can join us on in
the future! I'm stoked and so is Raj. I'm also (not so) secretly happy to
see Spike staying local, so maybe i can grab the keys once in awhile. :)

My roadster is filthy and the SR20 continues to impress me after all these
years with no signs of dying...612 miles within 12hrs and only two tanks of
gas.

As a laugh, maybe Harlan could post one of them on the Solvang site as the 2020 "get together" photo.? Car show - population: 1.If there's a silver lining to all of this, it's that I've been getting loads of work done on my car, and even some house projects to keep the boss happy.? I'm sure I'm not the only one.? We should have even more cars next year, and with more 'shelter in place' inspired fixes and mods!Erik

Alvin. as I remember you once mentioned on this list that the folk at Z car
garage did your roadster hardtop.  Do you have pics of the process or any
details on what they did?

My 68 Solex Roadster is almost ready for paint and I would like to also
update my port hole window hard top.

Are the side windows behind the door custom cutouts?  Looks like the top was
built up around the rear window???  Any tips/info will be appreciated.

Recent work on my roadster includes full engine rebuild with all parts
matched and balanced (85K original miles), NOS late model Solex (replaced
the original old style Solex), Evans waterless coolant, new heater core -
valve - cables, seats stripped to metal and rebuilt/reupholstered, all new
interior carpet and panels., new wheel bearings and suspension wear parts
all around, new calipers and rear cylinders, new lines, new shoes/pads, new
rotors, new comp front springs and sway bar, new fiberglass rear springs,
new Bilstein adjustable shocks, chassis coated, body work done, etc.  Hope
to get to painting soon..

Being in San Diego, I never use a top, but would like to make it look nice
in case I ever do.

It is a Thompson Fiberglass Products hardtop, nothing custom, windows and
