[Roadsters] early 1600 steering box

Gary J,

Dann at Rallye may know of a source, or may still rebuild some of
these units himself. I don't if Dean at Datsun Parts has such connections.
Also, there's Steve (whose last name escapes me at the moment) in Texas
(lurks on the List) who is a roadster service specialist.

The problem, as
you probably know, is that the roller wears a groove into the worm gear at and
just off center. The worm has to be replaced, because it is a complex
configuration, and cannot be remachined as far as I know. The worms gears are
hard to come by and are expensive. By "expensive", I mean one could be in
excess of $1000.

An alternative is to replace the "A" box with a "B" box
from a mid-69 or later car. There's a little work required on the frame to
make it work, but the "B" boxes don't suffer from the weaknesses of the "A"
boxes. A number of people have make such conversions, and I can give you the
name of one who knows what he is doing if you contact me off List. (I'm not
sure he'd appreciate me broadcasting his name to the entire List.)

Gary

my 1966 1600 steering box,
original, is getting increasingly sloppy and dead on center.I have tried to
adjust it, but too much pressure takes the slop out and makes it hard to turn.
And too little makes it easy to turn but even sloppier on center.

has anyone
replaced the steering box or rebuilt it, and if so any ideas as to how to find
someone to do it or where to get a rebuilt box?

Z part question

Googling it says it is an interlock pin for a 1.6l (4 speed)
roadster.
check
http://www.abouttimespares.com.au/showpartslist.asp?cat=4&sub=114&subsub=5706,
then search for part number.

Peace,
Pat
