Gary has sent me an excellent explainer of Nissan's antipollution
system that included different distributor weights and springs for the
U.S. market. He gently corrected my misunderstanding of the "smog
pump," by pointing out it injects air, not exhaust fumes !!! Over the
years, the notion of a "smog pump" and how it seemed like such an
afterthought, made for a much darker grasp of the matter, for me.
Thanks Gary for the illumination.

My 311still had the "smog pump" on there. The car had 41,000 original
miles when I bought it in 1984, and as far as I could tell, the air
injection system still worked. I got a set of 7.5 degree mechanical
advance weights and countersprings and installed them when I took it
off, and the car's performance improved quite a lot.
