Pete,

Your message didn't say anything about how the valves were set, nor what 
measurements were taken to ensure that the lift and duration are uniform on 
all four cylinders.

#2 is essentially fed from the front carb, and #3 from the rear.  If #1 and 
#4 are running OK, the answer would appear to be with something other than 
the distributor or carbs.
