[Roadsters] gear box type--was Trany fluid

While Dann is basically correct about not being able to rely on the cases to
tell which type of box you have, I have five transmissions in my garage at
the moment. Three have the early style case
(http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Trans/Early_style_case_1.jpg and
http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Trans/Early_style_case_2.jpg) and the other
two have the later-style case
(http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Trans/Late_style_case_1.jpg and
http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Trans/Late_style_case_2.jpg).

All of the early-case boxes are servo synchro and both of the later-case
boxes are Borg-Warner. I'm not saying you can rely on that, but it is
consistent in the boxes that I have. But the only way to tell for sure is to
look inside.

This is what the servo-style looks like when you look through the fill hole
in the side: http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Trans/Servo_synchro_1.jpg.

I tried to take a picture of the BW style but my camera wouldn't get a good
image, so I had to resort to a shot of a junk BW gearset that I have lying
around: http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Trans/Borg_Warner_synchro_1.jpg.

Of course you can't really get a good view through the fill hole when the
trans is in the car.

Do you mean Borg vs. Servo type synchros?

Dann Bramhall at Rallye has a good description on his website. Look under
rebuild kits.
