First, I've been reminded that the Datsun stock clock stops when power is
removed, so it's not the electro-mechanical wind-up type I thought in the
discussion on here earlier of battery charging/current.

But on clock reliability, out of the half-dozen Roadsters I've had for a year
or more (68-70 model years) only one car's clock consistently worked !

And it's just that problem of getting to it, as you point out, that had kept
me from doing any exploration.

Also I figured out Roadster Time is measured in miles.

Speaking of clocks. My 70 1600 clocked has basically not worked. I have been
busy working on other issues that actually keep me from running the car and
have
not been concerned about the clock. I run the car almost daily now. A few days
ago the clock started working. It kept good time. This lasted a few days then
it
stopped again. Any body have this experience and any ideas for easy way to
correct this? The clock looks difficult to get at for investigation.

Splain this to me.

Does the thing have a timer, with a current sensor? 

And what happens when it switches from red to green? (Besides the LED changing
color)


Is there a dual stage charging circuit, perhaps, where red = high charge rate
and green = trickle?

I'm always suspicious of these things since they're usually not sophisticated
enough to match what they do to the CCA/battery size and age.

And Tom, I think the clock is spring wound, and no current draw except for the
second or two it takes to trigger the electro_mechanical windup.

I too bought a well reviewed battery tender off Amazon for my Datsun.
Not too impressed with it, on first use it stayed red for more than 72
hours,
which is the max it should have taken.  I gave it another 48 hours, and
it finally went green.  The unit (block that plugs into the AC power)
always feels a bit too warm even for when it is not actively charging.

My battery has always been quick to self-discharge (or the clock
is drawing too much current, which I don't think it is), and the
electrolytes
might not be completely in balance, which might be throwing the
battery tender into a confused state.
