[Roadsters] Alternator options

Yes, a GB EI dizzy and GM alternator were the first things I did to my '66
1600. Both were easier than I thought they'd be.
If I do another engine, I would investigate other alternator conversion
options (from early Saturn or Nissan KA) as the GM alt is a larger beast.
Regardless, I wouldn't stick with the stock 35A alt and external voltage
regulator.

I had a half dozen old original alternators several years ago and took them
in to an alternator repair shop here in Milwaukee. They all tested bad and
the guy said that if they were later models they would have pressed in
diodes which are much easier and faster to repair. If they have soldered
diodes the repair cost and time is much higher and not worth the effort. I
switched to a 1991 chevy alternator and have never looked back.

Really? If you can't find an alternator in/near Chicago, no wonder Tim can't
find squat where he lives. <g>
Rallye only lists rebuilt alternators for 68-70 1600 ($140 w/ $65 core
charge), which, according to the parts manual, is the same as on the 68-70
2000. I'm thinking shipping would add $10-$20.
What's the price you're being quoted to have yours rebuilt?
I'd think someone (at least Craig Halstead or Mike Young) would have an
alternator for sale.
There's also the stock alt substitutes or conversions:

Hi gang,
kind of slow out there on the list, and I'm still in need of an alternator.
I haven't been able to find one locally (Chicago area, though did find
a starter - thanks, Matt!) and the price of rebuilding mine is about
the price of a new one.
So, is it worth shipping mine out for the core charge to someone like
Rallye Enterprises and get a rebuilt one from them? The shipping
charges add up though, right?
Things are moving along, it may just see the road this year!
