[Roadsters] Starting issue. Smoke = bad

My guess: Ammeter. Way to tell: nothing will work except the brake lights.
Check that then either jump across it or spend some big bux on a new
one. Lucas smoke will not fix this one.

Dan,
You omitted some critical information:
What is the voltage across the
battery terminals? If normal (~12.5), what is
the voltage at the positive
terminal on the starter? Without further
information, if you don't even have
lights and you're SURE all the fuses and
connections are good, I'd bet on an
internal battery fault. Some voltage
measurements will give a clue, though.
Now, you can have good voltage across the battery, but have a partial internal
fault create enough resistance that you cannot crank the engine but the lights
will still work. But, nothing at all? Says battery to me.
Had an
aftermarket alarm system in my '97 Jimmy. One day, it strands me at the
market. Cranks a bit, then the alarm goes off and the car won't crank.
Played
lots of games, but finally called my wife to come with the other car
so I could
jump the truck. I was convinced it was the alarm system, since it
will by
design prevent the car from being started in response to certain
intrusion
events. So, I had the system yanked. Still had a problem. What I
didn't
remember was that the system would also alarm if someone tried to
steal the
battery. That should have been a clue. When I checked the
batterry terminals,
the positive side was hotter than ______. Internal fault
at the positive
terminal mimicked someone trying to disconnect the cable.
New battery solved
the problem. (I really didn't need the alarm anyway...)
Gary

Everyone,
I need some help. Over the last week, my car has been on jack
stands while I
replaced and greased all my grease fittings. I finally
finished last night.
I put the car back on the ground and tightened everything
up. I decided to
take the car for a spin to see it is was less squeaky.
My
battery has a quick disconnect on it, on the positive side. I attached
that
and turned the key. The starter ran right away and turned a few times.
I shut
it off since it did not start right away. I have not driven it in two
weeks,
so this is normal. When I turned the key a second time, I heard a
small pop
and saw a bit of smoke off the negative terminal. The starter did
not go at
all. Turned the key a third time, same thing.
I tried a fourth time and now
I get nothing. I pulled the lights switch and
they lit for a second, but now
nothing.
I checked the battery, and the connections are tight. All fuses are
still
good. The battery had been disconnected for two weeks, but has been
strong.
Any thoughts as to why it would turn over fine, but then blow smoke
off the
battery and die?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Dan
P.S. I did
adjust the rear drums and added disc brake quiet to the front
discs, if that
helps? Didn't touch anything electrical.
