Some thoughts regarding the difference between powder coating and POR that
many ignore or may not be aware of.
ANYTHING you have powder coated MUST be able to withstand 4500F for an
EXTENDED period of time in order for the powder coating to adhere and flow
out properly. If it does not reach that temperature for the required period
of time, then the effectiveness of the coating will be compromised
accordingly. POR is applied at room temperature.
POR is flexible to a degree but ever more so than powder coating. I bent
AND straightened a pair of fuel tank straps that had been coated with POR
and found no problems with the POR coating... it literally bent and
straightened out. I don't know that powder coating would do that.
Powder coating WILL chip just like glass... that's essentially what it has
become a glass like coating on your surface. To my knowledge, of the POR I
applied to the wheel wells on my Z and Roadster... I think it may have
scratched it, but no rust yet nor bare metal.
Powder coating MUST be done by others on pieces small enough to fit in an
oven. Granted, there are some HUGE industrial ovens out there, but their
use isn't going to be cheap nor available everywhere. To do large areas,
powder coaters use an Infrared Heating Lamp to cook section by section.
(The powder must still reach 4500F in order to cook properly.) That means
that doing the inside of your fenders, either front or rear is going to be
very difficult at a powder coaters. Not only that, but you must have
stripped both sides of the metal to bare metal in order to NOT destroy the
finish on the other side.
I used POR in my driveway for both the front and rear fenders AND the Rocker
Panels AND the complete interior of the car as well as the complete interior
of the trunk. And I did this AFTER I had done the bodywork.
So, for my money .. POR took the prize.
