[Roadsters] Transmission interchange question

Never heard of connecting a Miata transmission to a R16 or U20 motor, so would be interested in that website link. 

Options are limited because the R16 and U20 engines have the starter on the left. Options I am aware of: 

roadster 4-speed 
roadster 5-speed 
Datsun Diesel transmission, or use the bellhousing to adapt 71B or 71C trans. Search 311s.org forums for more info.

After almost a year of being off the list I'm happy to be back. 

I've got a white 66 1600 that's pretty much stock. I'm considering rebuilding or replacing my 4 speed transmission, even though it's still working fine. 

Is there any information or website out there that has a list of transmissions that will bolt up to the R16 engine with minimal or no modifications? I did find a great site that gives details on installing a Mazda Miata transmission. 

I'm just looking for what my options are.
