I had a similar problem with our 68 jumping out of fourth gear when we
bought it.. I took the tranny apart and found the sincro on the forth gear
side had been forced ans mashed some of the teeth. It would go into fourth
but when you put the gas to it out it would jump. I took a file and refaced
the teeth now it works great.

A quick search on the 311s.org forums indicate two common issues:

- the mainshaft nuts have loosened and backed off
- the roll pin that locates the 5th/reverse gear shift fork has
sheared/fallen out

Lots more reading here:

Subject: [Roadsters] 5th Gear Popping Out

Just purchased a 1968 2000. I'm driving it from from Texas to Southern
California. A couple of hundred miles into the trip, while driving at about
70 in 5th gear, it all of the sudden popped into neutural. It will not
physically stay in fifth gear. Any clues?

I'm in a hotel tonight in Roswell, NM, and have access to internet through
sometime tomorrow morning.

I
appreciate the help.
