You can get smaller (6" x 2") halogen backup lights from manufacturers like
KC Hilites (http://www.aztrucks.com/product.asp?pr=Backup_Lighting) or PIAA
(http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamp-pages/1500bu.html).

I found the best way to loose tailgaters with my Saab 900 was to just put
the gear lever into the reverse gate, but of course not any further toward
reverse. Turned on the reverse lights, backed them right off.

The large ugly black rectangular driving lamps that came with my 69 2000 are
now under the rear bumper of my pickup as backup lights, work GREAT.
Couldn't put rectangular driving lights on a Roadster, then it would look
like my long lost twin brother Alvin's car :).

Well, as long as we're throwing ideas about switches out on the table, how
about driving lights on the rear bumper? With a switch of course!
The stock backup lights constantly remind me how much more useful they would
be with brighter bulbs.
