I received the note below today. Vern was Jack Scoville's engine  builder and 
he is immortalised on the hood of Bob Klemme's ex-Scoville  2000.

Engine builder and racer Vern Colvin passed away  Sept. 13 2008. Vern is 
mentioned in these pages with Jack Scoville and Al  James. Vern was an innovator 
and competitor. He loved to go fast, then tried  to go faster. Always to hole  
Vern.......
