I'm no expert but I did run into a similar issue in the eighties with my
first 1600.
This could be a Vapor Lock.

Just a thought.

Jim,
You have fuel to the fuel line at the carbs, but that still may not mean
fuel into the carbs. Are you aware that there are fuel screens on the banjo
bolts where the fuel enters the float chambers? Check those, but don't be
surprised if you don't find any. Many of the cars I've worked on don't have
them anymore. I have the part number if you need it. They were still
available a few years back from Nissan.
Another thought, it may be your gas cap vent is clogged. If air can't get
into the gas tank, the pump will eventually not be able to pull fuel up to
the carbs. Try starting the car with the cap off.
If that doesn't help, well you get what you pay for. :-) And give us
another shout so we can start thinking of other possible causes.

And old fuel never helps anything!

I am hoping someone has seen the same symptoms.
I completely rebuilt my engine, and had the carbs rebuilt. The
distributor is new.
I fired it up, and she ran. Wonderful.
Over the past month, I tuned it as best as I could. It was running
fine parked.
Today, I took her out, and she ran very well, for about a mile, then
she started acting up. First, she would not idle, then I had to keep
the rpms above 2000 or she'd stall, but the time I got home, another
mile later, she was barely running.
Now she will not start. I can get her to kick over on starting fluid,
she will sputter and even rev up for a moment, and then nothing I do
with the throttle keeps he from reving right back down to a stall.
She does have old gas, it is quite yellow. BUT when I removed the fuel
line to the carbs, there is plenty of fuel flow from the gas pump. I
do have the return line connected.
I checked the points, fine. The distributor has not come loose. Vacuum
lines are fine.
The only thing I changed was to set the idle up a bit.
The plugs look fine, except a bit sooty at the edges.
I walked away from it, I just cannot figure it out. My next trick will
be to use a separate gas can as a fuel source.
Jim
