Do I need to use lock  washers along with the big thick flat washers seems
there would barely be  enough room for locks.

The heads came with two lengths of studs. Long ones where the bridge  washers 
go and short ones where they are not needed. It's very common for them  to 
end up either in the wrong hole or replaced with incorrect studs. Lock  washers 
are a good idea.
