"LimeRock was closed today, Wednesday [Aug 20] for an hour and a half so
Paul Newman could take a few last laps there in his GT1 Corvette and say
goodbye. He was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago and is not expected
to make it past September."
PLN raced a black and gold "customer" 510 prepared by Bob Sharp Racing,
beginning in 1972, a few years after BSR made the Roadster to Z and 510
transition. He went on to drive the wildest and fastest rides that BSR
and other entrants would field, was a consistent contender in amateur
and professional racing series, and later, an owner and entrant himself.
He and Joanne were fixtures in the Lime Rock paddock and down home
favorites with track workers and fellow competitors. He's a gentleman,
an accomplished driver and professional, a philanthropist of the first
order, and he will be sorely missed at his final checkered flag.
