much better to do a leak down test.  with the leakdown you can assess where
there is a problem much easier and how bad is it.  If the intakes leak it will
show by sounds in the intake track. If the exhaust valves leak look into the
exhaust itself for leaking air sounds and you can check the rings by checking
the dip stick tube for passing air.  Then by the percentage of leaking air you
can decide if it is the time to remidy the problem or not.
