Usually the water pump outlet/radiator inlet hose will -NOT- be hot as
normal if the water pump fails. BTDT.

 If the waterpump is not leaking from below, what is the best way to test
it? Can you assume it works if both radiator? hoses get hot thus assuming
the water is circulating? Or could the water get hot without a functioning
water pump? TIA

2 thoughts, first is 'doh'- it does have a fan belt on it, right?

Second is, if a compression test turns out ok, check the water pump.  They
don't usually fail, but it's possible.  Or, a large piece of crud has gotten
loose and blocked a passage....
