I don't know about the U20, but nearly all engines can have a chain
replaced with only the front accessories, pulley and front cover(s)
removed. Most chain-drive overhead cam designs require valve cover
removal too. I once replaced a chain on a Chevy pushrod V8 in 2 hours. I
can't think of a possible reason to remove a head for a chain, or a cam
for that matter.

Since the Japanese 4 cylinder heads are so small accessible I suppose
removal isn't considered loathsome. Coming from an American car and
truck background I avoid head removal whenever possible. A V6 or V8 head
is a definitely more than a "6-pack" job.
